2nd Great-grandfather – Paternal mother’s line of Cleary Family
Timothy Cleary was born in Offaly, Ireland. While working as a farm labourer in 1860 Timothy decided to leave Ireland and travel to the Colony of New South Wales. He travelled to Australia aboard the immigrant ship Hotspur. Timothy married a fellow immigrant Ann Malone on 3 August 1861, in Parramatta. Until his death in 1910, they had six children. He died on 24 August 1910, in Parramatta, New South Wales, having lived a long life of 75 years.
Timothy Cleary, a farm labourer in Offaly, Ireland was born in 1835, to Ann Polin and John Cleary.
In 1860, Timothy was living in Killeigh, King’s County, a village in County Offaly, Ireland. [Irish: Cill Aichidh, meaning “church of the field”].
At the age of 26* Timothy Cleary, farm labourer, left Plymouth, England, on 3 December 1860 and sailed aboard the ship “Hotspur” to New South Wales. He arrived in Australia on 24 February 1861. Also aboard the “Hotspur” was Ann Malone, a 23* year old spinster and general servant.
* “Assisted immigrants” are individuals whose passages were either subsidised or paid for by another person or through another agency. The purpose of subsidising immigrants was to encourage only healthy, fit and young individuals to immigrate. Common practice among some “assisted immigrants” was to lower their age when applying for subsidised transport to Australia, thus ensuring their selection.

Five months after arriving in Australia, aged 26, Timothy Cleary married Ann Malone on 3 August 1861, at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Parramatta, New South Wales, when he was 35 years old.
Death of Son: His son Miles passed away on 6 June 1875, in Parramatta, New South Wales, at the age of 5. Miles Cleary (1869–1875)
Birth of Son: Little is known about Timothy and Ann’s fourth and last son, except that he was born in 1882. James Cleary (1882– )
Residence: Timothy lived with his wife Ann Cleary in Fleet Street, Parramatta, New South Wales, until she died in 1890. Timothy continued to live in Fleet Street until 1893.
Death of Wife: His wife Ann passed away on 25 January 1890, in Parramatta, New South Wales, at the age of 52. They had been married 28 years. Ann Malone (1834–1890)
Residence: Timothy Cleary lived in Church Street, Parramatta, New South Wales, between 1895–1898.
Australia Becomes a Commonwealth: On 1 January 1901, Timothy Cleary was living in Parramatta when a federation of the colonies was achieved after a decade of planning, consultation and voting. This established the Commonwealth of Australia as a dominion of the British Empire.
Timothy Cleary died on 24 August 1910, in North Parramatta, New South Wales, when he was 75* years old.
