When Ross Herbert Johnston was born on 19 December 1925, in Yenda, New South Wales, his father, Ralph, was 32 and his mother, Ruby, was 28. He married Rosamond Joan Jeremy on 5 March 1949, in Parramatta, New South Wales. They had two children during their marriage. He died on 29 April 2009, in New South Wales, at the age of 83.

Ross Herbert Johnston was born on 19 December 1925 at Yenda (near Griffith). The second child of Ralph and Ruby Johnston, his sister Myee was 5 years older.

He started school in Federal (near Lismore) where he would catch a ride on the milk truck in the morning and undertake a daily walk home. Later in Fredrikton, Ross went to Primary school and when the family moved to Kempsey he attended Kempsey High where he excelled in woodwork.

Early adult years

After leaving school an opportunity came up and Ross joined the Commonwealth Bank in Kempsey until World War 2 broke out. He applied for the Airforce while in Kempsey and subsequently enlisted in Sydney in 1944. He was discharged on 8 April 1946 with the rank of Leading Aircraftman. After his war service he rejoined the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney based at Parramatta Branch.

At Parramatta he met Rosamond Jeremy. She was to become his wife and unquestionably the love of his life. They were married at Leigh Memorial Church, Parramatta in 1949.

They had two children, Dianne in 1953 and Mark in 1955. As the kids grew up Ross focused on his family and even enjoyed involvement with local sporting activities and teams.

Ross spent many years relieving staff within the Bank in suburban Sydney and Nelson Bay, until he was made Manager at West Pennant Hills Branch. It was there he remained until his retirement in 1981.

Retirement

Ross enjoyed 28 years of retirement being occupied with woodworking, gardening, fixing & tinkering, Australian poetry, overseas trips, tennis, golf, and later carpet bowls.
