About Our Johnston Ancestors

A small biography, known as a Micro-Bio, has been prepared for direct ancestors of the Johnston family and their spouses. These related ancestors include members of the Black, Crawford, Hindmarsh, Loane, Moffitt, Rutter, Urpeth, Robinson, Trickey, Spoust and Brough families. Each Micro-Bio is based on verifiable sources, documents and citations obtained from official sources. Access to each small biography is available from the Johnston tab at the top of this webpage.

At times the presentation and content of this information can be changed or improved. If you wish to offer any suggestions, comments, information, photos or feedback please enter a post on our blog.

Which Johnston Family?

Many people are associated with the surname Johnston; understandably this name is not unique to our family. The name is shared by many groups or individuals who are not actually related to us, or even to each other. Ancestral relationships of unconnected individuals or families should be avoided.

Our Family Ancestor is John Johnston

Our objective is to clearly identify those people with the surname Johnston who are our direct ancestors. To meet this criteria we know that they must have Irish or Australian heritage and been directly related to John Alexander Johnston (1794-1878) and Mary Crawford (1802-1883) and their ancestors or descendants.

About John:

John and Mary were both born in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and arrived in New South Wales, Australia in 1860. They married in Ireland in 1822 and had ten children. The descendants of the union between John and Mary created the direct ancestors of this branch of the Johnston family.
